Paris St Germain managed a quite impressive victory over Chelsea in the Champions League last 16 round to reach the quarter-finals yet again. This victory appeared improbable a few days ago after PSG managed to only get a 1-1 draw in the first leg at home.
The fact that Chelsea had an away goal under their belt made the blues favourite to progress to the quarter-finals. However, a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge meant that it was the French club who progressed to the latter stages of the European competition. PSG had come back three times in this tie and midfielder Blaise Matuidi reckons that the coach Laurent Blanc had a major impact.
Blanc suffered defeat at the hands of Mourinho and Chelsea at a similar stage last season. However, he was not going to let that happen once again after he produced an impressive set of tactics that prevented Chelsea from playing their game. Despite chasing the game with 10 men for most of the match – including extra time, PSG were the better team. Blanc’s position at the club has been coming under much threat over the last few months, as the club has not been unable to produce consistent form domestically.
This has been overshadowed by this impressive win in the Champions League.”We must highlight our coach, who has been much maligned. It is also his victory. He put the team out and he got it right. He had the right words for us at half time to give us the confidence we needed. We are all happy to have him as coach. We never had a problem with him. His is the only European team in contention for four titles. We can do something historic,” said the midfielder, as PSG still retain the hope of winning four trophies this year.
